| Favorite skiing and
snowboarding runs at Telluride
Telluride is a
mountain with a tremendous variety of terrain for skiing and
snowboarding. It seems that no matter how close you look from a
distance you never really find all the little nooks and crannies of
Telluride's peaks, ridgelines and basins until you are actually in
them. You'd never see Log Pile or East Drain from a lift and if
you ski fast you'd blast right past them.
At Telluride my favorites on lift 9 are Bushwhacker either as first
tracks on a powder day or wide arc carving after a fresh grooming the
night before. Mammoth seems great anytime (can you say
bumps?). I also like the steep, narrow chutes called Mammoth
Fingers. East drain is pretty cool on the snowboard and Log Pile
for a mellow tree run where the snow lasts a little longer.
On lift 6 I'd say Apex glade with good snow and the Zulu trees.
A little farther off the beaten path are Happy Thoughts chute and if the
snow is good finish it off on Killer Slide. I also like the steep
skier's right on the face of Silver Glade or the short but steep face of
Chongos.
On Gold Hill I like to explore the whole area reachable by lift
14. To the skier's far left of Little Rose is an area now known as
Andy's Gold. In the hike to days of Gold Hill it was known locally
as the Rose Garden. It's right at about timberline so the trees
are small and pretty open but it's really steep. It does get a
little late day sun so the snow can get tricky there. On lift 7 the
Coonskin headwall when groomed freshly groomed or on a powder day and
North Chute's bumps. For
steep bumps on the lower mountain O'Reilley's or Stumper are super when
the coverage is adequate. You won't find those names on the map -
ask me. On lift 5 Palmyra on the bump side is where you will find
me. Another neat little run I often take guests down, especially
kids, is the always ungroomed Silver Tip. Alta is a blast if you
can get early tracks on a powder day. On lift 4 I'd say Humboldt Draw
or Misty Maiden. |
